All of the mock ups were made using Microsoft Powerpoint.
Front Covers:
Pros: This design is very simple in the way it displays headlines and the picture that relates to the main headline. The masthead is also big therefore the reader will know exactly what magazine it is. The amount of stories on the cover tells the reader that there is a lot of great stories in the magazine to read.
Cons: It's simplicity gives it a boring feel despite being used by many magazines. This means the picture and mast head have to look stylish and appealing to draw in readers.
Cons: The amount of space left is very little, and could therefore suggest that the magazine is very messy and not well laid out, which is a key priority in the front cover of the magazine.
Pros: The headlines are well laid out with little information to show what they are about. The picture will also capture the reader, with some of the headings covering the model which could look good if done at the right point of the model. The main headline is big so it will tell the reader that a specific music artist has taken part in a interview.
Cons: The masthead is to small and is therefore more dependent on the picture for attention. The fact that it is small means that it isn't well recognised by readers and will therefore be less acknowledged by people in shops.
Contents Page:
Pros: There is clear representation of the magazine as well as the contents page. The content of the magazine is simple to read, and the pictures used will highlight the most important articles.
Cons: The simplicity could make it look boring, and there could also be a possible large amount of empty space which will need to be filled.
Pros: The title is big and clear as well as where the content of the magazine will be. The pictures are also laid over each other differently which could look attractive with a frame as it will look like a photo.
Cons: The layout of the pictures may be seen as confusing despite being different. There could also be a lot of open space which could make it look boring to the reader.
Pros: It is nicely laid out with a clear representation of the magazine. The content is also clear, and the pictures also display the topics of some stories well. A message from the editor shows the magazine is engaging with the reader in making them want to read into the magazine
Cons: There may be a couple bits of open space which could be cut out.
Double Page Spread:
Pros: There is a lot of information about the artist that is being interviewed. The pictures are also clear to see and in good positions allowing there to be a lot of writing.
Cons: The headline is small therefore readers may not know what the story is about.
This design is the one which I will use for my final piece. Compared to the other two this layout spreads evenly over the two pages and will allow every bit of space to be filled up. It will have the amount of pictures the majority of my survey suggested and leave enough space to write enough content for my article.
Pros: The article is clear to read and is spread well over the double page. The pictures are also big giving a clear representation of the artist therefore making them be seen by the public.
Cons: The headline is small making the reader not know what they're reading. The article is not split well across the two pages making it confusing for the reader.
Pros: The article is big allowing there to be a lot of information about the chosen artist. The headline is also clear telling the reader what the article is. The pictures are big and split up well.
Cons: the pictures and article isn't split evenly across the two pages meaning that the pictures on one page will look boring and isolated.
Final Decisions:
I will use the first design for my front cover as my final piece as it is clear to read and easy to display information for my audience. It will also be easier to fill each space and therefore make it look attractive. This is the best design as it will allow my to target my audience straight away with a big, stand out picture. This will also allow others to know which genre my magazine is based in and possibly make it their next purchase.
The third design for my contents page is the one which will be used in my final piece. This is due to the content being laid out simply with some associated pictures that relate to the main stories of within the magazine. The message from the editor will also engage the reader allowing the audience to be more involved in the magazine. When compared to the other two designs, this one allows content of the magazine to be read clearly and allow my genre to be portrayed to the reader as I have room for pictures of artists in the industry. I will also split up the content into different sections, so people know what they are reading.
My first double page spread design will be the one I will use for my final piece. Compared to the other two this layout spreads evenly over the two pages and will allow every bit of space to be filled up. It will have the amount of pictures the majority of my survey suggested and leave enough space to write enough content for my article.
